AARPCV First Quarter Community
Service Activity:
Did you know with 4.6-million
hotel rooms in the United States, an estimated 2.6-million soap bars are discarded every day? Did
you also know that 1.4 million deaths can be prevented each year by handwashing with soap? The Global
Soap Project recovers and recycles discarded soap from American hotels
with a process where it is sanitized and remolded into new bars that are distributed to vulnerable populations including orphans,
disaster victims, prisoners and refugees. Since its inception, GSP collected over 100 tons of soap that would have ended up
in the landfills. To date, our bars of soap have reached people in need in 18 countries including Kenya, Uganda, St. Lucia,
Swaziland, Haiti, Ghana, Uzbekistan, Cameroon, South Sudan, Tunisia, Ecuador and Guatemala. AARPCV will support
the Global Soap Project initiative to ensure unused
soap is distributed to those in need, with the goal of improving health through personal hygiene. We will sort soap donations from hotels, take inventory, inspect and clean previously used soap, get rid of any bad soap,
cut bars of soap from the reprocessed soap, put soap in boxes, move boxes to storage area of warehouse, break down and set
up boxes as needed, and/or help keep the warehouse neat and tidy. All volunteers must be at least 12 years old with adult supervision to work in the warehouse. This project is not accessible for wheelchair users and because of the strong soap scent, may not be
appropriate for those with chronic respiratory condition. If you would like to join your fellow AARPCV members for a morning of fun and community
service please RSVP at
volunteer@aarpcv.org. There are only 15 volunteer spaces available for this activity so
please RSVP soon! A confirmation email with additional information
including directions will be sent to the first 15 RSVPs.
