To kick off a hot summer, AARPCV celebrated its Summer Social on June 2, 2012. It was a beautiful, sunny day and nearly
50 RPCVs and friends came together in the Kirkwood neighborhood. The social was hosted at the home and garden of Kristin
Unzicker, who serves as Special Events Co-Chair. The AARPCV Grillmasters heated up the burgers and hot dogs, while members
contributed the usual array of fascinating dishes of all varieties.
Members and
thei r families enjoyed the tradition of family-friendly yard games, including sack races, badminton, volleyball, bacci ball and
more! The highlight for all the little ones was the water balloon toss (or perhaps it was a water balloon battle!)
With two cooler-bins full of water balloons, it was a sopping-wet game with a lot of laughter! Thanks to Vice-President
Jessica Otieno, there were games and prizes for all participants.
A new addition this year was the Homemade Pie Contest, coordinated by Amanda
MacGurn, Mentorship Co-Chair. In a special competition to seek out the tastiest summer pies, members sampled various
treats, from blueberry and fruits to chocolate goodness.
While there was minimal
official business to discuss, the membership approved a donation to a PCPP in Senegal, supporting a latrine project.
Other announcements were shared regarding recent and upcoming events. The Silent Auction, a part of the Summer Social
for the past two years, was deferred for later in the year, potentially as part of a bigger fundraising initiative for an
artisan market event.
