Habitat for Humanity volunteer with the Carter Work Project - Haiti, 2011
Around 30 AARPCVs and their guests gathered at the lovely northwest Atlanta home of Bede Campbell on the night of April 21 for the Second Quarter Potluck.  There was the usual array of tasty international dishes and long-time and new AARPCV members.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation by RPCV Willie Wilkerson (Cameroon, 1963-65). Willie has been accompanying former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn on their yearly Carter Work Project build with Habitat for Humanity for many years. It was our great pleasure to hear him talk about his latest trip to Haiti in November, when he and 500 other volunteers helped to build 100 new homes in one week for victims of the 2010 earthquake. He also presented two videos that allowed the group to see the volunteers and the Carters in action, and to meet the grateful and hardworking recipients of new homes. It was a moving tribute to the great work of Habitat, the Carters, and Willie and other dedicated volunteers, and to the spirit of the Haitian people. Willie stands out as the only volunteer to participate in every CWP since its inception in 1984.

If you are interested in supporting his efforts for building in Haiti, visit Willie Wilkerson's fundraising page. Our own Board President, Maricarmen Smith-Martinez, is joining the cause and raising funds to join the Habitat trip this coming November as well. (Donate to Maricarmen Smith-Martinez's fundraising page here.)

For any members that missed the potluck, feel free to send details about your involvement in local or international organizations to the Volunteer Committee at volunteer@aarpcv.org, especially if the organization is looking for new volunteers. Let the committee know if you or any organizations you are involved with sell crafts, as we are exploring a possible craft sale with a portion of all proceeds benefiting AARPCV.

Mark your calendars now for our Third Quarter Pot Luck, September 15. More information will follow.
