International Donations

As part of our continuing commitment to Peace Corps activities around the world, each year AARPCV raises funds to contribute to volunteer projects through the Peace Corps Partnership Program. The International Committee searches for potential funding opportunities, specifically targeting those projects submitted by PCVs from the state of Georgia.

Projects are presented to the Board, and if the Board agrees on the project’s potential, more detailed information is obtained from Peace Corps/Washington.  The projects are then presented at an AARPCV gathering and put to a vote.  If the majority of RPCVs vote to fund the project, the International Committee, with the aid of the Financial Committee, works to ensure that this donation is made.  Projects can be funded in whole or in part.  Visit the Peace Corps Partnerships Program website for more information.

2012
- To date, AARPCV has supported two funding request from PCVs hailing from the state of Georgia

In February, AARPCV provided funding for a request from K. Stanhope in
Peru and a
total of $500 was AARPCV_Logo/Peru.jpgdonated towards this effort to provide improved cooking stoves. StanhopeAARPCV_Logo/Peru.jpg reports that families currently cook over a wood fire which produces a choking black cloud that can cause severe respiratory infections among young children. This project will help fund materials for new stoves that will eliminate the black smoke, burn less wood and cut down on deforestation.

At our Summer Social on June 2, AARPCV voted to provide $1,881.92 to a local latrine construction project in Senegal, fulfilling the total funding needs of the project. In the project proposal, the Georgia volunteer reported thatAARPCV_Logo/map.jpg a baseline survey of all compounds in their remote village was performed, in order to better assess the needs of the village. A result of this survey showed that 63% of the compounds in the village did not have a functioning latrine, an essential part of healthy and sanitary living. This project was proposed to help those families who do not possess latrines, acquire them through Peace Corps Partnership community cooperation. Funding will go towards buying the necessary materials to build sturdy and functional latrines and to train two community members in proper sanitation practices to share with the rest of the community.
