Reaching Underserved Populations
The first quarter potluck focused on Census 2010 and efforts
to correct the miscounts of millions of people - mostly people of color and low-income people - during the last two censuses. Speaker
Catherine Han Montoya leads the Multicultural Leadership Project at the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund
(LCCR), the nation's oldest and largest civil rights coalition. She shared information about how those miscounts affect
our communities - in particular how it can reduce federal funding for hospitals, education, child care, disaster preparation,
and representation in Congress.
LCCR’s 2010 Census Public Education Campaign combines
research, material development and distribution, media, and grassroots mobilization to encourage individuals, especially those
from underserved communities, to complete their census forms. You can read more about the project at www.civilrights.org.
